Here's a sample of the truckload of editorial illustrations and animated promo I made for local newspaper Gazet Van Antwerpen's special about the struggles of young muslims in Antwerp "Tussen Meir & Mekka" ("Between the main shopping street of Antwerp and Mecca").

More illustrations and animation on my blog: jangojim.blogspot.be/2013/04/tussen-meir-mekka-illustrati...

Awesome! Political stuff is by far the hardest and delicate thing to do and you solved the quest avec brio! I'm sure that this will speak to many people, very well done. The integration machine tops it all of :D, what's a GVA?

thanks so much, man ! It was my first editorial job and indeed a delicate subject. But I've only gotten positive remarks. Also from muslims. Haven't gotten any death threats yet :). Maybe the only thing that could've been more subtle is the skin color, because muslims can be white too. While doing a series like this you automatically start using cliches and stereotypical elements ( and using the same color scheme here was just prettier visually I think ). My main focus was that it had to be dealing with the subject in an illustrative way and lighten up the texts. And that definitely worked. So I'm happy :)

yeah, I know what you mean, the most Turkish are white, at least those who live in Berlin for a while :D The color scheme is great man and you've transformed a complicated subject matter into something that people could understand and identify with, that is wonderful! If I ever go for world domination you would be my campaign manager of choice!

I just came to a stockpile of Herges TINTIN comics, damn I love how political incorrect those are, if you would write like that nowadays people would call you a racist.

hehe, superthanks, man ! I would be honored to be your campaign manager.

and yeah, those early tintin comics are pretty much racist. In a way understandable. People didn't know any better ( I'm not talking about violence towards or discrimination though ). I remember an aunt of mine talking about the first black guy in Antwerp. He was a local attraction. People had never seen a black man before. The tintin comic about Congo is very controversial in Belgium. They already tried several times to ban it. I don't think they should ban it, rather embrace it as a piece of art in a different time and use it to talk about racism. Same with the portrayal of black people in early cartoons. You know, bone through the nose, big red lips. I think in our civilized world now most people know that's how people looked at it back then. And I hope most people are smart enough not to be racist ( although i'm probably naive ). That it is over the top. I don't look at it as racist now, rather a certain visual language in the history of cartooning. And I still love to draw African tribal characters that way. but to conclude, tintin, visually, is so so good :)

I use to discover common things always later then everyone else :D, I asked some friends about tintin and it seems that almost everyone had them in their childhood except me and I'm pretty much fascinated right now. I absolutely agree with you, it was another time and people didn't know any better. I believe that everyone has prejudices, which normally fell off when they get confronted directly with their fears, real racism is something so irrational that it must get taught, usually by your parents. religion works like that too, as an example. Tintin is visually so epic, I can't get enough :)

it's really cool you discover tintin now. I don't look back at it that often, because I know it and take it for granted. I should, though. it's cool to find out about things later than most people. you look at it in a different way. chances are some things might be less impressive then, as childhood memories are often way more romantic and nostalgic. you forgive mistakes easily. I'm sometimes amazed how many people of my age, or a little younger, that I meet and have never seen star wars or jurassic park before. to me that's mindblowing

yeah, racism is something we need to be taught about, because it's something that naturally happens, I think.
